The announcement in August, 2006, that Drum Corps International was bringing both its headquarters and future World Championships to Indianapolis represented a major step forward in Indianapolis' rapidly evolving music initiative. The Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association and Matt Carter, the ICVA's vice president of strategic development, were proud of the role they played in helping to facilitate DCI's move.

"Attracting DCI to Indianapolis is another shining example of strategically targeting music associations and the events these associations can bring to the city," said Bob Bedell, president and CEO of the ICVA. "Like our highly successful sports initiative, we are continuing to develop a tremendous synergy among talented musicians and music organizations that will pay dividends for years and years to come."

DCI joins Music For All, Inc. (formerly Bands of America), the Percussive Arts Society, the American Pianist Association and Orchestra America in re-locating to Indianapolis. DCI's 2008 championships will be one of the first events to take place in the city's new, $675 million Lucas Oil Stadium. The stadium, featuring a retractable roof, will eventually be connected via walkway to the expanded Indiana Convention Center, 12 hotels, 7,200 hotel rooms and Circle Centre, a shopping mall with more than 100 shops and restaurants.

"We were blown away by Lucas Oil Stadium, which provides us the best of all worlds: a state-of-the-art venue with a retractable roof that can offer us the optimum outdoor environment for our competition, but also give us a hedge against weather," said Dan Acheson, DCI Executive Director and CEO. "We also know our participants and their families will love the convenience and amenities Indianapolis offers. Finally, DCI certainly hopes to benefit from the other music associations already located there. From the beginning of the discussions, the Indianapolis representatives made it clear we would be an ideal fit and we agree.

The 2008 dates are Aug. 5-9. Subsequent World Championships will take place in Lucas Oil Stadium in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.The flexibility of Lucas Oil Stadium with its retractable roof was essential to DCI’s decision. “DCI’s decision to bring its World Championships underscores the value of Lucas Oil Stadium’s multi-purpose capabilities," said Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson. “This will be an extraordinary event both for the participants and for citizens of Indianapolis. And we are delighted to add DCI to our ever-growing portfolio of music-based organizations."
